Scholarships


THE GALBERD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Galberd Memorial Scholarship, administered under the auspices of the Woodbury Historical Society, endeavors to perpetuate the compassion, care, and spirit of Constance and Herman Galberd. The Galberds were long-term residents of Central Valley and were both dedicated to serving their community. They were members of the Historical Society for many years and served as Officers/Trustees. Additionally, Herman served on the Monroe-Woodbury School Board. Constance was a Registered Nurse at Cornwall Hospital and they both were long-term members of the Woodbury Ambulance Corps. 

Application Guidelines:
The Galberd Scholarship is awarded to a current or former graduating senior, RESIDING IN THE TOWN OF WOODBURY, who plans to attend an institution of higher learning (college, technical school, Nursing, and/or other heath-related fields). Students interested in applying should contact their school’s Guidance Department, or the Woodbury Historical Society, 543 Route 32, Highland Mills, NY, 845-928-6770 or 845-928-6479.

The application should include a detailed resume, a short summary of the student’s intended use of the scholarship, recommendation letters, a transcript, a form signed by parent or guardian (if applicant is a minor), and releasing information to the Scholarship Committee. In addition, the applicant should include a brief statement showing evidence of strong commitment in one or more of the following areas: 

  1. Achievement in the sciences and/or health care.
  2. Service to school and/or community demonstrating compassion and altruism, as well as integrity, excellence, and/or leadership.
  3. Intellectual curiousity and creativity.

The amount of the scholarship is determined by the scholarship committee and may vary from year to year. All applicants will be notified of the results, and the scholarship will be awarded at the respective school's Award Assembly. A completed application for the Galberd Memorial Scholarship must be submitted to the High School Guidance Office by the date specified by the school or, if necessary, to The Woodbury Historical Society, P.O. Box 30, Highland Mills, NY 10930. The deadline for 2024 scholarship applications is Saturday, April 6th.

THE KIRK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Kirk Memorial Scholarship, administered under the auspices of the Woodbury Historical Society, honors Margaret S. and Adam Kirk, educators and community leaders well known in the area for over 50 years. Both had wide-ranging talents and interests and were lifelong learners in the truest sense. 

The Kirk Memorial Scholarship endeavors to perpetuate the compassion, spirit, and intellectual curiosity that both Margaret and Adam exemplified.

The Kirk Memorial Scholarship amount is determined by the Scholarship Committee and may vary from year to year. In terms of qualifications for the award, scholarship applicants are asked to demonstrate a strong commitment in one or more of the following areas:
